Synopsis
Set in 1942 Port Talbot, the film follows teenage Richard Jenkins (Harry Lawtey), a miner’s son whose life is transformed when his teacher, Philip Burton (Toby Jones), recognizes his raw talent.
Through strict tutelage and emotional support—including from Philip’s landlady Ma Smith (Lesley Manville)—Richard grows into a compelling actor. Their bond deepens when Philip becomes Richard’s legal guardian, mentor, and ultimately his adoptive father.
As war, family tensions, and shifting identity challenge him, Richard adopts Philip’s surname and embarks on his journey toward becoming Richard Burton. The film explores themes of ambition, class, sexuality, and the fine line between mentorship and personal sacrifice.
