Synopsis
When art teacher Kang In-ho is newly appointed to a school for hearing-impaired children in the city of Mujin, he begins to notice that something is terribly wrong. The students appear unusually withdrawn and frightened. As he digs deeper, he discovers horrifying truths — several children are being physically and sexually abused by faculty members, including the principal and other teachers.
With the help of Seo Yoo-jin, a human rights activist and member of the local civic group, In-ho fights to bring the perpetrators to justice. However, their path is obstructed by a corrupt legal system, powerful officials, and a community that would rather silence the scandal than protect the victims.
Based on real-life events and a novel by Gong Ji-young, Silenced is a harrowing exposé of systemic abuse and institutional cover-up. The film’s release stirred massive public outrage in South Korea, leading to legislative reform known as the “Dogani Law”, which abolished the statute of limitations for sexual crimes against minors and disabled people.
