Synopsis
Snowy Road follows the heart-wrenching journey of two young Korean girls — Kang Young-ae, a timid girl from a poor family, and Jung Soon-deok, a bright and strong-willed girl from a slightly wealthier background — during the final years of World War II.
Set in Japanese-occupied Korea, their peaceful rural lives are shattered when they are deceived and abducted by Japanese soldiers, and taken away from their village. Along with other girls, they are forcibly conscripted as “comfort women”, a euphemism for sexual slavery in Japanese military camps.
As they endure unspeakable abuse and dehumanizing conditions, the girls form a deep, emotional bond. Young-ae’s quiet resilience and Soon-deok’s fierce determination give each other strength to survive the horrors of war.
The story is told through a dual timeline — juxtaposing their painful past with the present-day narrative of an elderly Young-ae who continues to struggle with her traumatic memories. Now living in silence, she must find the courage to share her story publicly for the first time.
Snowy Road is a powerful tribute to the real-life victims of wartime atrocities, delivering a moving message about friendship, justice, and the importance of remembering the past.
